...is a psychology practice offering the services of Dr. Elizabeth Van Hook and Dr. Stanley Fisher. We are based in New York City and offer individual or collaborative treatment using biofeedback, cognitive behavioral therapy, hypnosis and self-hypnosis, and psychoanalysis, in brief therapy or long-term treatment.
For all of us, a meaningful and enjoyable life is a work-in-progress. Each day, we balance the demands of relationships, work, and health using whatever skills and experience we've acquired along the way. Sometimes we become aware of our inner thoughts and feelings commenting on what we're doing. We naturally question ourselves. Do our reactions make sense? Should we trust our feelings? Are our judgments accurate? Are we acting in ways that support our goals?
Psychological Solutions, as a site and a practice, has as its purpose to offer a range of psychological strategies that can assist you in managing the stress of living in a very complex world. Our collaborative approach to treatment evolved through our exploration and evaluation of the different psychological theories and techniques that each of us use in our clinical practices - psychoanalysis, cognitive behavioral therapy, hypnosis, biofeedback, brief therapy, and long-term treatment - as well as their relative usefulness. We recognized that all of these approaches had elements of wisdom that people can use to understand their emotions and relationships, to make decisions and changes, or to cope with a variety of medical conditions (e.g., surgery, migraine and other headaches, acute or chronic pain, cardiovascular problems, etc.) Any of these psychological solutions can be applied either separately or together, in a single or in multiple sessions. Each of us has worked with patients whose therapeutic needs changed in the course of treatment, or who became interested in trying other approaches or even in working with a different practitioner. Our joint practice provides access to a variety of facilities in a single location.
THE BULLETIN BOARD
A place to answer questions and share findings.
A patient experiencing chronic, repetitive nightmares came to us searching for a solution. We came across an interesting approach in the August 2001 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in a report on Imagery Rehearsal Therapy (IRT). The researchers found that sleep quality could be improved and chronic nightmares reduced with the practice of Image Rehearsal Therapy. Here is the procedure:
- Write down the story of the nightmare, no matter how frightening, in as much detail as you can remember.
- Create a new ending for the nightmare, making the new ending as peaceful as you can.
- Just before going to sleep perform a relaxation exercise. You might have learned how to do this using biofeedback, self hypnosis, or meditation. As you relax, rehearse the new version of the story in your imagination.
