Stanley Fisher, Ph.D.

I am a psychologist and psychoanalyst, and have been in private practice since 1979.  Although I was initially trained as a researcher, and not as a therapist, my primary interest has always been in human problem-solving, In my clinical training and practice I found that my pre-doctoral training in which I studied and developed a variety of strategies by which individuals can learn to solve problems, added to my clinical and therapeutic skill.

In addition to my post-doctoral training in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, I have also been intensively trained, in the areas of medical, forensic, and psychological applications of hypnosis.  My approach to patient’s problems, as you might suspect, tends to be eclectic.  The techniques I apply are based on the individual patient's needs and goals, as well as my own understanding of what might be the most effective approach to a patient's problems.

Although as a psychoanalyst I have some patients that are engaged in intensive and long term exploration of their emotional responses and behaviors, over 50% of my practice is devoted to short-term, problem solving oriented treatment.  This group includes many who came to see me for a very specific issue in which we are often able to use a single session treatment, based on self hypnosis, to alleviate the problem.

To this day, I continue to look for and develop psychological solutions which can enhance the lives of my patients.  Although it has not, until recently, been incorporated in the traditional psychoanalytical approach to treatment, I have found that it is often helpful when I am able to bring into treatment knowledge derived from my earlier life experiences as a business executive, computer consultant, machinist, and longshoremen. In addition to meeting the needs of my patients, I have another vested interest in improving my knowledge and skill. My continued study and training in psychological solutions are critical elements of my personal life as well as my clinical practice.

I have lectured on medical hypnosis and held research faculty appointments at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  Results from collaborative research in self hypnosis have been published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery and the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

I have discussed, and/or demonstrated self-hypnosis on NBC's Today Show, ABC's Good Morning America, CBS's Early Morning Show, MSNBC, Fox News, and CNN.
